This is generally considered Harris' crowning achievement. It is played here by the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Leonard Bernstein, who was a great proponent of the work.

Do you know the date of this recording? Library of Congress number?

Thanks for the wonderful post. Strange reverb on the final timpani note!

  • @maxreger100 It's recorded live in December of 1985 at Avery Fisher Hall, very likely combined from more than one performance. I can't find anything resembling a Library of Congress number with the CD.

The timpani note does sound a bit odd for timpani. At a guess (I don't have the score), it's probably the combination of timpani and bass drum.

    You're most welcome !

  • @mitsou50 Thank you so much. Then this recording dates from 1961. To me, very important information. Again, many thanks.

I have the original recording by the NYPO coupled with Bernstein's own Jeremiah Symphony, on LP COLUMBIA MS 6303. Library of Congress catalog card numbers for these two compositions are 61-1348 and 1349 . Hope this helps.

  • Ineffably tragic opening.

    The most original American symphony.
