TAKE TIME OUT, Don't Take It Out On Your Kid!
Mike Johnson 8 February 1987

TAKE TIME OUT.
DON'T TAKE IT OUT, ON YOUR KID.
IT'S NOT HARD.
IT DON'T, TAKE MUCH TO GIVE.

BE A FRIEND.
AND YOU'LL, BE GLAD YOU DID.
TAKE TIME OUT.
DON'T TAKE IT OUT, ON YOUR KID.

TELL'EM YOU LOVE'EM.
THEY SAY, THEY LOVE YOU TOO.
BE PROUD OF'EM
IN EVERY, THING, THEY DO.

HOLD AND HUG'EM
THEY'LL FEEL, YOUR WORDS, ARE TRUE.
TAKE TIME OUT.
AND YOU, WILL FEEL, GOOD TOO.

[turn around]

TAKE TIME OUT.
DON'T TAKE IT OUT, ON YOUR KID.
IT'S NOT HARD.
IT DON'T, TAKE MUCH TO GIVE.

BE A FRIEND.
AND YOU'LL, BE GLAD YOU DID.
TAKE TIME OUT.
DON'T TAKE IT OUT, ON YOUR KID.

Back by popular demand, "Take Time Out" was written in February 1987 in a motel room in El Paso, Texas, after a long night in Juarez, Mexico. I couldn't sleep so I pulled out my guitar to do some practicing and got to flipping TV channels looking for a late night movie to no avail. The only thing consistent was a continuous string of TV ads by the National Committe for the Prevention of Child Abuse. So, that's how the song was born. I wrote it in about 30 minutes while watching those ads.

It was first released later that year on my cassette album "Did You Hug Your Mother Today?"
It was again released in 1994 on a cassette single as the follow-up release to "Did You Hug Your Mother Today?"

That release was also sent to Big John Baldry's Michigan Jamboree Radio Show, WBYW, about a month before Mother's Day, and Big John called to tell me what a tremendous reception "Hug Your Mother" was getting.
It played for three weeks straight surrounding Mother's Day in 1994.
John plugged "Take Time Out" and though it's popularity soared that year and garnered a loyal following, it hasn't surpassed "Did You Hug Your Mother Today?"
