So astute! Consider James Bond villains, where they are overtly 'playing' the evil charcter and adopt the mannerisms, way of speaking etc. In Die Hard the audience we would consider him a villain only by virtue of the things he has done, rather than on some 'evil' persona.

Alan: Well, you see, er, it's you using that word. I would never use it, because, as any actor would tell you, the last thing you should ever do is judge the character you're playing. So, to me, that, er, is not a question if I, you know, some of them want X, some of them want Y and some of them go about it in different ways, and then you wind up saying "that's a bad man".
