The Maui 1 oil find was dated 1969. Hon Tom Shand, Minister of Mines, died (while still in office, although after the election campaign of that year had begun) on 11 Dec 1969, so it was prior to that date.
He looks so young! I remember seeing him playing Dick Deadeye in the show HMS Pinafore in Dunedin in 2003...he was very good too!

The 'cut-a-way' to Nadu Ballentine-Scott was remarkably modern for it's time. I can't recall many such instances occurring back then.
