Watch the progression of weather over the South China Sea for the entire year of 1979 in six minutes! The animation is composed of 3-hourly GMS1 infrared images (with occassional gaps) played at a rate of one day per second from December 1978 through December 1, 1979. The season featured Super Typhoon Hope, which made a direct hit to Hong Kong on August 2nd. In late September, tropical cyclone warning signal was hoisted in Hong Kong for two tropical cyclones simultaneouly located within 400 nautical miles of Hong Kong, the only time that this had ever happened. The season also featured Super Typhoon Tip in October, which was the most intense tropical cyclone ever observed.
