Made by Tanaka Hisashige over 150 years ago, mojikaki ningyo draws kotobuki, the Japanese character for "Long Life and Happiness". This karako can draw 3 other kanji characters as well.

wch76, Are you Chinese? No, "karakuri" and "karako" are the different words. "Karakuri"(noun) is from "Karakuru", a Japanese verb. It is sure that there are many mechanical dolls like this all over the world, and this is the original work of Tanaka Hisashige in Edo period.

tis mechanism was actually introduced from china more than 1300 yrs ago hence the name 'karako' which means 'chinese child'.
