Better quality video: http://www.vimeo.com/2476297

This is a 17 second animation that I created for my university course. It is also my first proper 3D animation. I modelled, rigged and animated everything in the video and it was muchly fun!

I used Maya, Mental Ray and After Effects. I hope you like it.

  • Oh, and sorry I didn't ask in my previous post, but what university and course was this for?

  • Hello!

Thanks for the kind words :)

This was created using Maya. It took me weeks to do this but I was working on and off and it was my first proper animation and I didn't have a strong grasp of the software at the time.

This was for a computer animation module at the University of Bradford. The course is computer animation and special effects. However, if you're thinking about coming to the UK to do an animation course I'd go to a better uni to do it

  • Oh, okay, I live in the United States. I usually use Animation:Master; I have been for two or three years.

  • I heard that's alright software but I'd advise that you learn Maya if you want to work for any animation company. It's the industry standard.

  • sorry for the comment repetition! im a newbie to youtube - no joke!

yeh i had the same problem with parts of my animation. I found that using clamped tangents between particular keys sorts it out.

  • Ooh I'll have to remember that next time and also learn how to do it! :P

No problem about the double posting, believe me, I have NO idea how to use youtube other than clicking play on videos! :P I find it so confusing hehe.

  • Nice animation. What software was used? and how long did it take you to animate this?

  • Ahoy there, thanks for the kind words. And yes, I'm very sure that this is my first 3D character animation. Before this all I'd really done was bouncing balls and stuff like that. :P

Yeah the feet were a problem. The sliding happens because I animated it using key poses with the tangeants on flat then smoothed out the keyframes so Maya would give me the inbetweens (like it does anyway) but for some reason I couldn't animate the feet properly so I just left them.

  • The movement is really natural and comical - love it! You sure this is your 1st 3D character animation? ;)

Btw the feet seem to slide outwards as he lifts the weight. Was that intentional?
