Surgery for Advanced Colorectal Disease

Colorectal cancer is the fourth most frequently diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. In 2009, an estimated 140,000 new cases of colorectal cancer was diagnosed in this country. It was estimated that in the same year, about 50,000 people would have died from this disease. Despite these statistics, mortality from colorectal cancer has decreased over the past 30 years, possibly because of earlier diagnosis through screening, and through better treatment modalities.
