NOTE: This movement was broadcast having started into the movement by a few minutes. I don't know why; they should have less of Conlon talking by 3 minutes and let the thing be complete. OK, having said that...

Antonio Pompa-Baldi performs the 3rd mvmt from Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3. This is from the "Concerto" series of the Van Cliburn finalists of 2001, Episode #3, "A Sense of Self." • Actually, I deem Aviram Reichert's rendition from the 1997 Van Cliburn finale far superior, both piano-wise and orchestra-wise, in spite of Conlon being the one who was conducting at that time, too...

  • Reichert's performance of this was indeed excellent, particularly the finale.

  • This is absolutely FANTASTIC!!! One of the best performances of this piece. I love the raw and wild approach. Very much like Prokofiev himself played his own music.

This guy is unbelievable. Check out his other videos on you tube.

  • @MrYou2ber That may very well be. Yet, as I was saying, I was comparing particular performances, not performers in general. And as to the "true character of the piece" argument, given that music is always performed as a subjective interpretation and the perception thereof is also subjective, what is the "true character" of a piece? "True" to what or who? And how does one gauge the amount of said "truth"? I don't mean to be disrespectful but please don't insult me with that kind of talk.

  • @Hervinbalfour I've been wondering how performers play those arpeggios in 2nds. Do they mostly play single notes - the upper note? It looks like Argerich is playing with her hands together, possibly playing the 2nds, 1 hand on each note. I also think they sometimes leave out the downward sweep, and just do the upward.

  • @Nalsii I respectfully, completely disagree. Pompa-Baldi's playing captures the true character of this concerto. To compare both players, Reichert is a controlled fire; this performer is a bold explosion.

  • duro come il can
