The Louvre box style wasn't the only one offered. Japanese and Taiwanese factories use to make them in Pedestal and Orbital style. KDK, Sanyo, Hitachi and Toshiba stopped making the Orbital version in 1985 and 1986. Taiwan factories still make them. The Orbital version was sold 14-years ago in The Home Depot.
These type of fans are called "Louvre" I have catalogs from KDK, Hitachi and many others form the 1980's and early 1990s with these in them.
They were HUGE in Asia back in the 1980s and early 1990s. Current models no longer have electrical controls but digital soft touch or R/C.
The difference between the Japanese versions and Taiwanese is that the motor that controls the guard's rotation has a PC board which allows for random rotation instead of contact rotation to the left or right.
I would like to buy this

I remember these being sold at Brookstone and The Sharper Image back in the 1980's. Nice find.
