Kimani Maruge, the man believed to have been the worlds oldest pupil was buried today in Subukia. Maruge died last week of stomach cancer. The late Maruge grabbed media headlines when he enrolled for the free primary school education programme that was launched by the Narc administration in 2003. Maruge said a strong desire to read the Bible on his own is what motivated him to enroll in school at an old age. Maruge accomplished that goal before he passed on. He was a pupil at Kapkenduiywo primary school in the outskirts of Eldoret town where he had managed to reach standard five. But the post election chaos saw him relocate to the Cheshire home for the aged in Kariobangi North estate where he died aged 89 years.

  • He finally has dust in his ears. That's the only way he was going to stop learning. We all should learn from his refusal to just lay down and die. He never took no for an answer and Africans should never let anyone tell us no!

  • OMG,i didn't know this man passed away..RIP!

  • Rest in Peace, you were trully a role model to all. Till we meet again

  • Mzee Kimani dared to dream, he dared to do what was thought to be impossible at his age. He never thought one day he would be fated at the UN hq, where he rubbed shoulders with the most powerful people on earth. I hate the way our govt treated him in life and in death. This is a man whose funeral would have deserved the presence of Kenya's high n mighty but because he was a poor man who was displaced in the post election violence, not even Kibaki sent a message of condolances to the family.

  • A burial befitting a liberation war hero...Peace!

  • He will always be one of my few Kenyan heroes for his desire and determination. This man inspired the whole Kenya and outside Kenya.
