Strip away the various controversies that surrounded Greigs career such as the 'Grovel' series and the Packer breakaway and you are left staring at some very respectable statistics for aTest All Rounder. he averaged 40 with the bat and took 141 wickets at the cost 32,2 runs each .He was also a competent captain and tactician achieving the not inconsiderable feat of winning a series in India. Up there with Botham as one of England best al lrounders and all achieved while suffering from epilepsy.
I don't quite remember the Greig era, but it seems to me he was a much underrated cricketer, a proper all-rounder. Showed much courage against this fearsome Australian attack (most notably in Australia in 1974/5). But because of his undiplomatic approach to captaincy (ask the West Indies!) and his role in the Packer circus I think he doesn't get the credit he deserves as a player.
Let me get this straight: Tony Greig was dismissed by Max Walker with the score on 222 and the commentator was Ritchie Benaud? The twelth man would have had a field day with this one. :)
Tony Greig was a very underrated cricketer. "Informed" opinions are clouded by political judgments and there was no doubt he was a controversial figure. But as Australia found out, a very good batsman (plus bowler) too.
1st memory of Greig was this innings. He gave us some confidence back before he went to packer. If england had more than 3 courageous batters then we would have given the wi a tougher game than WE did in that old series long ago.
He batted well against the ozs and the wis. Good batsman.

They didn't bounce him because his weakness was leg-stump yorkers. Obviously they didn't get it in the right place on that day

This was the first Test Match I ever saw on TV. I was nine years old.
David Steele made 50 on debut. He is the non striker early on in the clip.
I remember the players of both teams so clearly unlike today where I hardly remember who plays for England now.
Its also nice, though sad too, to hear commentary from the late Peter West and Jim Laker
