The first "World AIDS Day" was observed in 1987, and because nobody at WHO wanted to alienate anybody, it focused on children and young people for the first 2 years. Gay people actually had to fight to be recognized as the primary victims of a scourge at the time.
Things were dire. I at least wanted us to remember who we were - by BEING who we were - so I went around performing some new songs I wrote, occasionally while a guy dressed in a Captain Condom costume roamed about passing out free protection..
23 years later, I'm one of the lucky ones, alive and thriving.
A lot has changed, but too much hasn't.
Here's a mash-up of "Things I found," performed live and solo at the Amazing Grace in Duluth MN, and "Celebating Blues," from my long lost EP StereoTopical Gay Music.
Have a reflective and safe World AIDS Day.
