Freddie Hubbard's Red Clay opens with the all the horns - Lippman's trombone, Jarvis's trumpet, Kerr's alto, Williams' trumpet and finally Eskovitz's tenor - each playing an opening statement over the others' backgrounds before the rhythm section enters with the playing of the theme. Solos by Lippman, Jarvis, Robbins and Eskovitz lead to an interlude by the horn section. The exhilarating arrangement of this modern jazz classic climaxes with a virtuosic electric bass solo by Cohen before the band returns to the now well known melody.

  • @22solveigh actually it's the trombone player who plays the changes well. The trumpet player simply plays wrong scales, which can't even be excused for "outside playing". Futile attempt to cover the mess by playing fast (sixteenth notes and such)

  • Drumming is terrible. Also I always get nervous when I see that type of bass.

In fact the band just sound bad behind soloists and no reaction interaction.

Arrangement however is Ok. The recording to be fare dosen't do it justice.

Tenor solo is frankly average purely on the fact the band simply don't lock in.

Yeah my worst fears now Iv'e listened to the bass.Hmm,His solo was basically saying nothing.

Too much of this type of jazz going around. Doesn't get my vote

  • definitely the best version on youtube

  • if anyone can give me a link to to the mp4 file to this much appreciated. theyre good

  • @22solveigh yeah ur right :-)

  • 2:20 pianist getting nasty with it >;D

  • I love this Bass part so much it is a blast to play.

  • Probably the way the chart was written... I'm not totally digging this arrangement as well.

    Good players though!

  • I am sorry - ment the trombone-player - the trumpet man is great
