Ive just built this wind vane for my Hunter Europa sailboat. Its a trimtab system with a horizontal axis vane and after some fettling it now steers a fine course. The Europa is a fast turning twitchy little boat and not ideal for vane steering , so in some conditions I have found it advantageous to damp the tiller movement with bungee cords.

Thanks, Yes thats Plymouth Sound in the clip

  • I made a trimtab for the rudder and made a horizontal axis vane, then linked them together. A lot of people have asked the same question as you, Ill try and take some close up pics of the unit and post another clip here. Thanks for watching.

  • yes i know i live in plymouth and seen this view in my yacht many times cool rig

  • Cool!

David Blagden (Hunter 19 Willing Griffin, 1972 Transat) did it with a vertical axis vane but he found the tab too sensitive. He solved it by locking the rudder and letting the tab steer (reversing it) - shows they have good balance!

  • Hi - great to see your self-steering set up. Just bought the same yacht - be very interested to see how you did it!

  • Wow now that is really good on a small boat
