Lisa Cronin, a Pollinator at the Eden Project, shows how to make sandals out of an old vehicle tyre. She shows how rubber is extracted from trees, and also explains that this type of sandal is popular in the Tropics as it outlasts shop-bought sandals many times over. For many people, the functional value of the footwear is much more important than the way it looks.
Find out more about rubber at the rubber exhibit in Eden's Rainforest Biome: http://www.edenproject.com/come-and-visit/whats-here/rainforest-biome/index.php
Our Pollinators interact with the public who visit Eden through stories, songs and drama.
@Dawgtha :
'tyre' is the English (USA spells it as tire) spelling, and it is spelt that way in Australia, New Zealand, etc.

HI there is a Greek model (pedila) I learned when in Skirros in the 70's,, used by all the Shepperd and the people who run in the mountains. Similar as yours but there is a part that hold the back of the foot, they can be regulated precisely to your foot. The "culbuto effect" is very efficient to walk fast with large steps.. I am looking forward for pics or a video and cannot find it. there is a leather part under the bridles, also, VERY comfortable !
I just dont recall the exact method ...

Proper recycling! Maybe car tires should be made from old sandals. :¬D

My father made the same style sandals when he was a child in Kenya 50 years ago and they still make them there.
