AS SEEN ON SOUTHERN STEAM 2010
The people of the West Country were in for a treat over the weekend of the 25th and 26th of September. First, was a historic run for 60163 Tornado, and the second run was a run on the Torbay Express, 60163' only Torbay Express of 2010.
The Saturday, and Tornado' first double header on the main line. Her partner for the day, 6024 King Edward I. The train was the Tamar Devonian from Bristol to Plymouth, with 60163 being attached at Taunton.
Sadly, we could only see the train once in the day, but it was plenty. Running 20 minutes late, the pair come flying round the bend at Totnes, whistles going, where our two cameras were there to capture the shot.
Onto the Sunday, and the Torbay Express. A small delay, apparently caused by the water stop at Taunton (answers on a postcard!!) was swiftly made up, as 60163 passes Paignton and starts her climb up Goodrington Bank. Our two cameras caught the ascent from two different angles.
We then dashed over to Kingswear, where the A1 needed to shunt her stock into the sidings, before running off to Churston and Paignton for turning and servicing.
Following Kingswear, we returned to a new favourite, Broadsands Viaduct. The A1, now facing the correct way for the return journey, passed over the viaduct en-route to Paignton.
While Tornado was at Paignton for servicing, we went back to our HQ for the weekend, and soon, we were being served our delicious Sunday Roast.
Finally, we leave the best shots to last. With the A1 bang on time, the A1 crew left Paignton a couple of minutes late, to avoid the stopping train that was 5 minutes before them. Because of this, the A1 didn't need to stop at Langstone Rock at Dawlish.
We set up two cameras, one at Shaldon, Teignmouth for the first part of the run, before seeing the A1 flying out of Kennaway Tunnel, right by the Marine Tavern pub......
Not a bad way to end.
