While trailing the Rams 14-0 in the first quarter, Montana throws an interception . By tackling the ball carrier, Montana saved a TD. The Rams got a field goal but 9ers wound up winning the game by 3 points, thus making the tackle significant. Phil Simms throws an interception but can't make the tackle. Two fine blocks by 49ers's Wendell Tyler and Guy Macintyre.

  • Not very fair to Simms.

  • Phil Simms was 37 in 1992, and the 49er/Ram game was played during Montana's prime.

    Poor example

  • montana tackled an old defensive back. simms tried to tackle a linebacker

  • If you look at that interception Jerry rice stopped running his route and Joe threw the ball where Jerry was supposed to be and that was a darn good tackle. As a kid I was a die hard 49ers fan and the rams always gave us a tough game, We found a way to win a high percentage of the games and that "89 NFC championship game was a thing of beauty!! My dad was a ram fan and I was a 49er fan !! So it was Fun times !!!!

  • He tried to tackle him...

  • That wasn't the first game of the season in 1992! The Giants wound up winning the first game of 1992 against the 49ers on Monday night football, and it was a close game. I think Jeff hostetler started that game, not Phil Simms. Simms didn't start a game in 1992 until Hos got hurt in which he cleaned up with a final game victory vs the oilers!

  • its cool, giants knocked joe out 2 times in playoff games so it all evens out

  • as awesome as it is embarrassing for Irving.....he can say he intercepted Joe Montana, but he also has to admit to being injured during a tackle from Joe Montana.

  • What happened was they were both rated no higher than a 3rd round. NY knew Walsh had worked Simms out, so they went ahead and grabbed him in the first round, which shocked the hell out of everyone. Had Simms come to SF he might have done marginally better due to the supporting cast. But as you said and SF fans are glad history got it right. You can't thank fate enough for the hall of famer in Montana. Both Joe's sons look like young Joe playing QB. Particularly the younger Nick Montana.

  • thats interesting since montana came out of notre dame and won a few national championships and simms came out of morgan state.

  • Both Simms & Montana came out in '79. Simms went to NY in the 1st round, Montana to SF in the 3rd. Bill Walsh had Simms rated higher and in fact wanted Simms. Montana was his second choice at QB. FYI ..
