The fuel consumption of a 540i 6 speed is not really bad by US standards. There are 4 clyinder, front wheel drive family sedans sold here which struggle to stay in the high 20 mpg range on the highway. A 540i can do this all day, cruising at our pathetic, sub-100mph speed limits. :-) BMW engines and transmissions are expensive, but that's because they are efficient and sophisticated for what they are.

if you look very closely you can watch the fuel gauge move down

I have a E39 530 and that does 155 mph on limiter . To be fair there isn't much more to get from the 3.0 litre motor . But these 4.4 540 E39 de restricted surely will hit about 165 mph no problem . Stock . Like the M5 those will keep climbing to about 180 mph . It's the aero dynamics that slow these cars down after the 150 mph mark . I can't imagine bmw designed them with those speeds in mind because there all restricted to 155 mph . I think it's a law set in place somewhere in the uk and Europ
