The Superheroines of the 1940's!

(Dedicated to Christine S, and to Trina Robbins!)

Women ran America during WWII; comic superheroines personified their spirit and their dreams.

Here they come:// Pulp mystery woman THE DOMINO LADY (1936); the first and terrifying superheroine, FANTOMAH (1940); Ma Hunkel, the hilarious original RED TORNADO; tough detective THE WOMAN IN RED; Will Eisner's friend of The Spirit, LADY LUCK; Batman's better half, Selina Kyle, THE CATWOMAN (costume, 46); female creator Tarpe Mill's panther-clad MISS FURY (41); stuntwoman and judo expert THE BLACK CAT; Lois Lane in one of her many superhero guises; the Queen of them all, Princess Diana, WONDER WOMAN; the freedom fighter THE PHANTOM LADY; Canadian NELVANA Of The Northern Lights, and her later postage stamp; The Cat-Man and Kitten, teen wildcat; web-spinner THE SPIDER QUEEN; stinging puncher THE SILVER SCORPION; straight-shooting Bulletman and BULLETGIRL; Hawkman and HAWKGIRL of the Justice Society of America; that 'socko' LADY FAIRPLAY (42); ephemeral INVISIBLE SCARLET O'NEIL (43); MARY MARVEL, the steel-smashing sweetheart sister of Captain Marvel (42);// the original MISS AMERICA of Quality Comics (41); and the second MISS AMERICA of Timely Comics (43); followed by other WWII hellions MISS VICTORY, singin' and swingin' PAT PATRIOT, evil's knell LIBERTY BELLE (42), YANKEE GIRL (45), the international GIRL COMMANDOS led by WAR NURSE (42), and aviatrix BLACK VENUS (44); // and post-War sheroes like fast and brash MISS MASQUE (46); teen-scenester PATSY WALKER, who later became HELLCAT in 1976; Stan Lee's THE BLONDE PHANTOM; shining SUN GIRL; beaming MOON GIRL; goddess VENUS; Namor the Sub-Mariner's cousin, NAMORA The Sea Queen; the original and eternal BLACK CANARY (47);// and retroactive heroines like SPITFIRE of The Invaders super-team (76), Alan Moore and Melinda Gebbie's erotic COBWEB (99), LUNA MOTH from Michael Chabon's Pulitzer-winning novel "The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay" (2000), and Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon's SILK SPECTRE I (85), who will be played by Carla Gugino in the new WATCHMEN film (2009).

Today's sheroes exist from these, and many of them are still here for us to enjoy!

  • Yeah! This is superb!

  • i like the song in mafia 2 it sounds so classy for the game

  • I knew about these characters because of a book I have on the history of heroines in comic books and strips, but I think seeing them in the larger size, makes all of them seem better.

  • damn it, why didn't I find this video 3 months ago when I was planning my halloween costume! LOL, awesome vid, thank you!

  • Kool

  • Fallout New Vegas :D

  • Thomas Dorcey - The Dipsy Doodle

  • @littleshoemaker

A few people have tried but the record company that owns that particular song keeps getting them taken down. I suppose you could either try to get it on itunes, find a CD or get Mafia 2 and listen out for it on the radio.

  • Grrrrrreat version!

  • Can someone upload the 1948 Capitol recording? That's the one that was remixed by Gramaphonedzie...
