The STA is a Gulf Stream II jet that was modified to simulate an orbiter's cockpit and handling qualities. In flight, the aircraft duplicates the orbiter's atmospheric descent trajectory from approximately 35,000 feet altitude to landing on a runway

  • The engines are put in reverse, speed brakes up and the gulfstream resembles a space shuttle in descent. The decent is something like 27.000 feet a minute.
