I can still remember, how on certain routes in Budapest there was a driver at both ends of motor+trailer+motor tram train. When the tram arrived at a terminus, the driver in the leading motor pulled down the pantograph, the other driver released his and started the train in the other dircetion.

If I understand correctly, you're talking about the terminus loop... which is the end of 99% of lines in Europe, esp. in Eastern Europe.
Budapest is actually rather an exception with their double-sided bi-directional trams that don't need the loop. Other systems, from Zuerich to Moscow usually end with the loop.
It sucks when part of the line must be closed, but the cars are cheaper, and the process is faster (no need to change the direction).
PS Have fun in Europe!
