The famous bridge built with POW labour in world war II, with unimaginable working conditions, taking it's toll on over 6000 Allied POWs, including Australian, American, Chinese and Malay. Today this bridge, still in operational use, can be walked over. Refuges at ends of each span allow walkers to stand out of the way when a train comes.
