I seem unable to master the spiral wedging that you have demonstrated a few times. My Hamada book calls this Chrysanthemum wedging. I just cn't seem to get the right position to get that "shell" shape. I seem only able to use bull's head wedging. Hope you can give me some more suggestions on this.
I rather enjoy wedging clay. Gets me good and pumped, it does.
I first got it when I tried not looking at the clay I was spiral wedging.
Half the time, I get called away from the wheel and have to leave a few balls that I'd wedged un-thrown. (becuase I wedge more than I knead - oh wait, umm, more than I wind up having time to use...:)
Yes you have to start right!;-) I think I finally got wedging down, but don't let the clay hear that! Simon I just wanted to tell you how much I love your tool set, they are perfect, light weight much better than any others I have tried, and they lend to new creativity too! Thanks so much for them! Hi all, I have trouble with wedging as well but I find that if I work with a smaller ball of clay I can get a good consistancy. Not everyone has the strength in their hands that Simon has, in fact I have arthritis in both of my hands and althought it hurts I vwon't let it stop me from working with clay, I just work with softer, smaller balls of clay. Thanks Simon for all your wisdom, I appreciate (and use) all of it.
Yesterday I stuggled uneven clay. I opened a new clay bag that was very hard on the outside and soft on the inside. I thought I wedged it well, but once on the wheel everything I threw went to the wobble.
Yup cutting corners never seems to work doesn't matter what it is! Now if I could only get Domtar to see the light I might still have a job in 6 months.
