Peter Molyneux speaks at the Game Developer's Conference 2009 in "Lionhead Experiments Revealed". Here we see the dog from Fable II in its early stages in one of Lionhead's many test scenarios. In this piece, the player can interact with their dog by using a hand/cursor to stroke or strike man's best friend.
To fans of the Black & White franchise, this particular method of encourage/discouragement is identical to how players interacted with their creatures. Peter went on to comment that that particular similarity was one cause of why this particular feature didn't make it into the retail copies of Fable II.
