@EVAUnit4A That being the case, it should be safe to put in only one battery and replace the other with a piece of conductive metal, so the toy will be working on approximately half the normal amount of power.
A safer but more difficult alternative would be to get a suitable diode and use that instead of one of the batteries - if you put it in backwards nothing will happen at all, if you put it in correctly (and assuming normal 3.0 volts) the circuit should work out to approx 1.0v.

I will probably never open this toy up.
It can only work with both batteries in place.

If you do decide to open this and upload a photo, I might be able to help you alter the volume. It should be as simple as adding or changing the resistor in the speaker circuit.
Alternatively, if it uses two batteries, will it work with only one inside (i.e. wired in parallel)? If not then it should be safe to put in one and replace the other with a wire (i.e. wired in series).
