This is an original tribute to Amy Winehouse called 'Invisible Magazine'

Amy was an amazing artist and her tragic passing has caused me to reflect on my own experience.

Amy shares my mother's birthday of September 14th and I learned of Amy's passing on my birthday, July 24th.

As I say in the video, five years ago, at the age of 27, I decided to stop drinking, or I would probably be dead.

After working in some of the top environments in the music industry as a radio DJ, including programming and hosting the first Radio Bonnaroo backstage in 2005 , I reflected and realized that I could join the 27 club if I didn't stop my excessive drinking that had gone on for a decade.

Within two years of my decision to quit drinking, I was on then Senator Obama's campaign staff, I organized the living Tuskegee Airmen and their families to the Inauguration for the Presidential Inaugural Committee, and then held a role in the White House Office of Correspondence.

I am so thankful for my decision and for the support of my family and friends, especially my mother, who quit two years before me in a partial effort to get me to stop. She is now coming up on seven years, Yeah Ma!

I wrote this song tonight and then recorded it immediately afterwards, so it's rough, but real.

I hope that you will enjoy it, remember Amy Winehouse, and perhaps, reflect on your own experience.

The lyrics are below:

I was 27 too once
with a bottle in my hand.
I said I've had too much
and I made my stand

Oh, Amy
you woke up alone in your bed
Far from
the place where you laid your head
Your eyes
opened to find a world unseen
Like turning
the cover of an invisible magazine

You were 27 too once
with a bottle in your hand
You said I've had too much
going to take a nap

Oh, Amy
you woke up alone in your bed
Far from
the place where you laid your head
Your eyes
opened to find a world unseen
Like turning
the cover of an invisible magazine.

We were 27 too once
with bottles in our hands
We said we'd had too much
and you turned to sand

Oh, Amy
you woke up alone in your bed
Far from
the place where you laid your head
Your eyes
opened to find a world unseen
Like turning
the cover of an invisible magazine.
