Our First Canoe Camping Trip

July/29/2010, we left French River Trading Post, heading west down the Main Channel, portaged over Recollet Falls. Next we ran a small unmarked set of rapids before lining around Little Flat Rapids, then traveling on around Timmermans Point into Pickerel Bay, past Bear Island, then up the Pickerel River to campsite #931. This is a nice remote site and great fishing. Day2, We traveled up Pickerel River, through Canoe Channel, continuing up the Pickerel River past Camp Island to campsite #901. This area was busy because its close to highway 69. We did not have much choice as we got last campsite available, someone had left an awful mess ( tissue and nasties) being so close probably gets a lot of use. Day 3, we headed east up the Pickerel River, past Flower Pot Island, through the Twin Narrows, to the Cross Narrows, and under 69 Highway, turned north up a narrow channel to Trestle Lake, which lead to a portage up Little French Rapids, and into Deer Bay. From here we headed north then west into the Main Channel and back to the French River Trading Post.
Completing the 14 mile Island Loop a 50 km Trip was a learning experience, we learned what to take, what not to take, and how far is too far to travel in one day. We really enjoyed this route, the only change we would make is add one more day and camp on the French River side to do this trip more comfortably, for us old farts.
