Allison Crowe covers Tori Amos' "Doughnut Song" - an intricate piano piece off "Boys for Pele". (This joins Allison's covers of Tori's "Northern Lad", "Josephine" and "1000 Oceans" - also here on YouTube.)

"The goddess incarnate" is how Allison has described Tori, and, her songs remain favourites for the Canadian indie musician.

Thanks to Sarah Wheeler, creator of the "Strange Little Covers" website (@ http://slc.justplainsarah.com ) for posting this quote:

"I think that other people covering my work is really exciting... I'm really open to that kind of thing because I think interpretation is an art form..." ~ Tori Amos, June 2004

The image accompanying the music was captured by photographer Billie Woods ( http://www.billiewoods.com )- on a day between concert performances, Allison visited the pier and beach at Brighton, England.

Doughnut Song

Words & Music by Tori Amos
As performed by Allison Crowe

Had me a trick and a kick and your message
You'll never gain weight from a doughnut hole
Then thought that I could decipher your message
There's no one here, dear
No one at all

And if I'm wasting all your time
this time
Said you never learned to take
And if I'm hanging on to your full shade
I guess I'm way beyond the pale

And southern men can grow gold
can grow 'purty'
Blood can be pretty
like a delicate man
Copper to steel and a hinge that is faltered
that let's you in let's you in let's you in

And if I'm wasting all your time
this time
Guess you never learned to take
If I'm hanging on to your full shade
Guess I'm way beyond the pale

Something's, something's just keeping you

numb

You told me last night that
you were a sun now with your very own
devoted satellite
I'm happy for you
and I am sure that I hate you
Two sons too many, too many able fires

You've been wasting all my time
this time
Said you never learned to take
And if I'm hanging on to your shade
I guess I'm way beyond the pale

I guess I'm way beyond the pale

Had me a trick and a kick and your message
You'll never gain weight from a doughnut hole

It takes a lot of work :) (and sheet music!)

  • nice interpretation!! this is what covers are all about - re-presenting the piece according to the artist's own connection to it. love the intensity in the 3rd verse.
