In this PBS interview, Natalie Merchant discusses her latest album, which uses music to bring poetry to life. She sings clips from some of the poems, and explains how this surprising endeavor reflected her need, at this point in her life, to branch out as an artist. Bringing each poem to life in a unique way by using a wide variety of musical styles, Natalie again demonstrates her versatility and creativity as an artist.

  • I just want to thank Natalie for telling me to turn down my music in Hartford, CT in 1998...Imagine being chastised by Natalie Merchant herself!!! Magic! I think she said: "turn that fucking shit down I'm trying to eat my fucking lunch..." to paraphrase. She was having lunch outside at the "Reader's Feast Cafe" and I was in the process of rehabbing a bldg next door which would become the "The Cosmic Bean Cafe" and called "one of the keys to the city" and "something out of Ginsberg's Howl....

  • by the Hartford Courant...no shit! Look it up! But Natalie didn't know that so obviously she isn't clairvoyant...she could be...who knows...? Point is: she doesn't like being forced to listen to Kenny Wayne Shepherd at full blast during her lunch...I know this for a fact...this whole "incident" is now one of my treasured memories...she really snarled at me too...menacingly...I feared for my life for a minute....seriously...she's can be fucking ferocious I guess..they told me later it was her!!!
