How did he get those sounds from his guitar? This was before the age of effects pedals - it almost sounds like a synthesizer.

ChasBeauregarde - some people are just wizards at what they do, that's why Les is a legend. He was a pioneer of multitracking.

We don't get to see what he's doing on all those off-camera tracks, we just know the sound is magic ! ! ! !

Plus, since he practically INVENTED that guitar, he could make it do whatever he wanted ! ! ! ! ! Thanks to these 10 uploads by GP, I now have nearly 30 videos of Les and Mary on their own playlist, one of 200+ playlists specific by artist or release year.

I think besides overdubbing, he found certain sounds from pitch bending with tape and mostly from having the slightest retard in different layers....but I get you...those high ring tones are his signature sound. More than genius....

Here they perform one of my personal favorites- their second big hit of 1953, after "Vaya Con Dios"; however, because of time limitations, part of the original recording had to be edited at 1:10 (omitting most of Les' solo and part of Mary's vocal in the second chorus).

I was ten years old in 1948 when I discovered Les Paul. I started saving up to buy his records and I probably have, thanks to CD compilations, nearly everything he ever recorded. In fifty years of listening to thousands of guitarists, he is still the most remarkable guitarist/inventor/innovator I have ever heard.He is primarily resposible for my interest in multitracking. I have had a lot of fun with it but am a rank amateur. Keep it up Les.
