Is Puberty in Girls Coming Too Soon?
New Study Points to Early Development in Girls; Experts Debate Trend

Like many 10-year-old girls, Lindsay Kendrick likes to play sports and attend camp during the summer.

A new study suggests that many American girls are reaching puberty years early. And like a growing number of girls her age, Lindsay also hit early puberty very early. Lindsay's mother, Beth, said her daughter first started menstruating when she was only 9.

"I thought it was going to happen early," said Beth. "She's been one of the tallest in her class, even taller than a lot of boys, and she started having early breast development."

Kendrick took Lindsay to her pediatrician, who told Beth that early puberty is much more common now, and said that Lindsay's period would probably start sometime in the next year.

"She started about two months after that," Beth said.

It's been a challenge for both Lindsay and Beth.

"She doesn't like talking to any of her friends about it," Beth said. "I try to keep up with her to make sure I send products with her to school."

A new study published in the journal Pediatrics may help lay the groundwork for future research that determines why, as past research has shown, more girls may be entering puberty early.

In the study, researchers assessed more than 1,200 6- to 8-year-old girls in three metropolitan areas for breast development and the appearance of pubic hair, both signs of early puberty. The research showed that by using these methods, scientists may be able to determine more accurately what factors could lead to early puberty in girls.

  • BPA is definitely a cause for this. But eating MEAT of animals that have eaten growth hormone feed is a more obvious reason. I knew a girl who ate abnormal amounts of salami, sausages and burgers. She had her first menstruation at age nine. I have been a vegetarian from childhood and mine started at age 15! Enough proof for me. - But try to avoid BPA nowadays, almost impossible.

  • This is great.

  • so true!

  • @Popsiclegirl1999 I know..and to be honest at 9 I did not know what a period was..we didn`t learn that until grade 5 at 10 or 11. and still all the kids giggled and sad ewww gross. I got mine at 14 and and i started puberty at 11 and ended around 18 or 19. My breast were soar until 19 so i assume 19. i`m a girl i`m 28 now..and it shocks me to death when i here of a 9 year old getting it..because its telling her body to stop growing, its now into woman hood. makes me so sad and sick.

  • @baum7des7lebens7 I know i agree...i keep telling people on these videos of 9 year old girl pregnant that its not normal for a 8 or 9 year old girl to start her menses (periods) shit, i didn`t even know what a period was - i loved playing house and dolls at 8 or 9. Now some companies are making period pads that have carebears on them. its normal for a girl to start from 11 to 18 finishing and boys around 11or 12-18 finishing, that was when i was going to school, now its girls at 6 or 7

  • Girls should not start puberty till they reach preadolescent! Which is age 9!! This is so not normal

  • @MysteryPromotes

I am not sure that is 100% correct ACROSS the board, sure it may be 95%..

However, how about legit butch STRAIGHT women? Or effeminent men? Isn't it unrealistic to tell them to play their "natural roles" if they are essentially mutants?

  • so whats the downside of it???????

  • This guy does not know anything about biology, chemistry, or engineering, period.

  • And yes this is why im vegetarian :)
