Joann Jimenez and veteran promoter Benny Soto founded RAZA in celebration of their Latin heritage along with Carmen Valentin just one year ago. Who knew it would become the talk of NYC's Latin music and underground dance scene? Their past guests have included such seasoned performers as Luisito Quintero, Bobbito Garcia, Bryan Vargas' "Ya Esta" salsa band and the Welfare Poets. This sexy soiree has also hosted the 'still talked about' Fania record release party for the late great Hector Lavoe with his nephew, Grammy Award winning dj/producer Louie Vega at the helm. The music that's featured at this unique afterwork affair fuses all types of Latin rhythms (an emphasis on roots) in a way that's irresistible to anyone with a pulse. The energy is simply contagious and what a better night to celebrate the revelry of their 1st Year Anniversary other than with a Masquerade Fiesta on Halloween night. Return favorites Tato Torres & Yerbabuena as well as DJ Afro (Los Amigos Ivisibles) will be providing the musical treats with a few unexpected tricks at this thriller of an event.
It is with pride that this evening's musical journey will be headed by the multi-talented DJ Afro of Los Amigos Invisibles. DJ Afro is the man responsible for writing more than 80% of the music for Los Amigos Invisibles. He's played guitars, keyboards, and provided background vocals for Los Amigos Invisibles' four full albums as well as for Louie Vega's "Elements of Life" and Dimitri from Paris' "Cruising Attitude". Aside from his work with Los Amigos, he has recently released his first solo track ("Mala Idea") and has published remixes for the Beastie Boys, Fantastic Plastic Machine, David Byrne, Radio Zumbido, Fundación Tony Manero, Sonorama, Soul Coughing, John Scofield and many others. He describes the music he spins as "Salsa brava, boogaloo, ye-ye-merengue, malandro, charanga gozona, cumbia borracha, and Latino del mundo (ya tu sabes)."
Yerbabuena is a collective of new-generation musicians, singers, and dancers that have been penned as "Urban Jibaros." Their blend of "Boricua (Puerto Rican) Roots Music" (also the name of their recently-released CD) has been hailed as "contagious", thus inviting their audience to become participants in something that is both unique and interactive. When at a Yerbabuena event, it immediately becomes obvious to the observer that these are folks at the forefront of a contemporary Puerto Rican/Caribbean musical experience and their many successes indicate that they will not disappoint. An experience with Yerbabuena is a cross between a family gathering, a musical "event", and a "jam in the park."
