Shay, from doing a psych degree I learned about Psycho-sexual Development. The first stage is oral, to do with being breast fed. There's a theory that thumb sucking can be a result of being weened to early from breast milk, leading the child to seek alternative oral stimulation. People with an oral fixation often go on to overeat, and smoke.

Try using a Babytard Thumb Chart, with smiley faces for everyday she doesn't suck her thumb. If she goes the whole week, she gets a treat.
