The greatest Leonore No. 3 I ever hope to hear was conducted by Karl Bohm at the Metropolitan Opera in 1978; he was old and seated, but when he stood up for the coda the orchestra unleashed a torrent of passionate sound the likes of which I have never heard before or since! Bohm's FIDELIO has always been my favorite.

By the way, it is the most amazingly wonderful thing to have the internet so that you can listen to 10 different versions of this geat composer without having to scour the second hand stores or order specialty or find people who know about it all who can diect you. With a press of a few keys, we have it all available here. I'm eternally grateful.

@jerramy , The Karajan version is the most complete, with utmost grandeur, perfect balance, and very well recorded. Classical performance! Klemperer is also quite perfect, personally I like Kempe and Furtwangler. In my opinion, this piece is beethoven at his most human, ethical, heroic and transcendental. The
Karajan has it all.

Way too fast, loses all shape! Give me Kna anyday over Walter, at least for Beethoven.
