Do you have the graphics set on low detail or something? Only the graphics look worse than The Sims 2.

can you actually DRIVE YOURSELF on bikes and cars? or is it just pick the lot and it goes there automatically?

You don't actually drive yourself as in you can't tell the car where to turn, where to stop, when to go, etc.
but you can click on your Sim and select go to ______ (depending on their traits) or you can go to a location in the hood and click go here, and your Sim will drive straight there.
