Obama signs controversial defense bill
Published: 01 January, 2012, 05:12
US President Barack Obama has put pen to paper on a $662 billion defense bill despite serious reservations from critics over the proposed handling of terror suspects. The bill also brought into effect a new round of strict sanctions against Iran.

Some provisions of the bill raise serious concerns among human rights advocates, who argue that they could allow indefinite detention and interrogation of any American citizen suspected to be linked to terrorism. They say it would deny US citizens legal rights protected by the Constitution.

After the bill was approved by Congress in December, Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch said: "By signing this defense spending bill, President Obama will go down in history as the president who enshrined indefinite detention without trial in US law."

Indeed, President Obama himself has expressed worries about the very legislation he has signed, saying he does not agree with all of it.

"The fact that I support this bill as a whole does not mean I agree with everything in it," he said in Hawaii, where he is spending his vacation. "I have signed this bill despite having serious reservations with certain provisions that regulate the detention, interrogation and prosecution of suspected terrorists."

Initially the White House threatened to veto the legislation but then pulled back after Congress made last-minute revisions.

Why NDAA 2012 is Against the Spirit of U.S Human Rights?
By Sreeja VN | December 19, 2011 2:04 PM GMT

President Barack Obama's backtracking from his earlier stand to veto the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) has put Americans under the risk of losing their human rights.
The Senate and Congress have already passed the bill and Obama now seems ready to sign a piece of legislature that could become a draconian piece of legislature making U.S. citizens vulnerable to legal abuse.

The President's office has defended the decision to approve the NDAA, saying the law was essential for the safety of the country and the revisions made by a corrections committee were "sufficient".

Why is the NDAA Considered Anti-Human Rights?

The American constitution and the country's traditional values stand for personal safety, liberty and free speech. These are, theoretically, assured to every citizen. In addition, the right to trial and the right to defend oneself in federal and civil courts are important elements of these human rights.

Obama Signs NDAA Bill With Signing Statement Clarifying Indefinite Detention Provisions
By: Jonathan Moormann
After a long battle over one section of the latest National Defense Authorization Act, President Obama signed the bill into law today - but with a signing statement. The statement, which can be read in full here, clarifies why Obama signed the bill and how the controversial provisions on indefinite detention will be treated. Although Obama says in the statement that he does not agree with the entire bill, passing it is necessary to maintain the operation of our military. He also added that the indefinite detention provision (section 1021) just codifies how our military currently operates rather than changing anything, and that "my Administration will not authorize the indefinite military detention without trial of American citizens."

  • One thing I hate is that he is building fear in Americans. Don't be afraid of Obama or any government leaders. This is a democracy in which WE THE PEOPLE are the leaders and if there is going to be another revolution, so be it. Don't be afraid to rise up, don't be afraid to use your god given rights to go against any government officials. We need to educate ourselves and realize what Obama is actually doing to this country.

  • I love the Russians. Who else would have the balls to act worried about Human rights, in America. This shit is just funny and, better yet, are the idiots that don't see the irony in this.

By the way, whatever happened to that Russian newscaster, who gave Obama the finger on the air? She needs a promotion, and a raise. Better yet, send her over here, and set her loose on American TV. I'm more inclined to trust her than the communists that broadcast our news. Dasvidaniya, druz'ya.
