Maria and her fiancee ended up losing their apartment because of a high utility bill. The day I met Maria, they had been living in a Sacramento tent city for three days. They were 'camping' on the streets but received a ticket for being homeless. Since this interview everyone in this tent city has been evicted.
Maria share with us what a day is like being homeless. They get up early to go to a park and get a lunch ticket. They split up to go to different homeless services for showers. Basically, their whole day is filled just trying to survive.
Maria's 1st wish was for her unborn baby. She's living homeless three months pregnant. She says they are moving into a new place. Knowing that Safe Ground was forced to move I pray they did find housing.

@Anaelnoire There are 14 million empty homes in this country. We don't have to build a damn thing, just collect the interest that was never charged to the banks on the bailouts they got by making them sign over vacant homes.

@elainebmack "If you know you don't have money, a job, and place to live, why get pregnant? Women still act as if they have no power or choice in these matters. Love does not conquer all, so just because she has a boyfriend/fiancee, or whatever does not guarantee that all will be well." - If she sought a man with money, your judgemental arse would call her a gold digger!!! PS you sound very anti-womyn!!!

Love does not conquer all, so just because she has a boyfriend/fiancee, or whatever does not guarantee that all will be well. We live in an anti-women, anti-children, anti-family culture, and people, especially young women of childbearing age, must acknowledge this, and stop pretending that everything will be "ok", no matter what happens.

homelessness eats up all your energy reserves pretty quickly
you feel exausted all the time, physically and emotionally
even if you find something to do to get food (collect tin cans) you have to battle with full out depression or depressive thoughts like
"ok i ll sell the cans for food and then what? i ll be fed forhalf a day if lucky, sleep and then on the grind again...pointless"

With only a fraction of the money spent in Iraq, we could have created housing and back to school/work programs for people (And Veterans who fought in the war) who need a hand up and who want to better themselves!!

sadly the greatest thing you can learn from the current economic desperation- and what is to come, is that if you are not VERY well off and VERY connected, you should avoid having children- poverty is like a disease- its passed on, and very tough to break!
