My arrangement of an old song based in a tune by Tchaikovsky

"John O'Dreams although often called a traditional Irish song, was written by Bill Caddick, using a tune by Tchaikovsky. The titular central character is equivalent to the Sandman, a fictional character who sends people to sleep. The song portrays all people as being "equal in sleep":

The Prince and the ploughman, the slave and freeman All find their comfort in old John O'Dreams

Obviously, sleep is also a metaphor for death, both as an eventual equalizer of all things, and for the allusion to a "crossing over," as in a river, a prevalent theme in Western spiritual beliefs"

  • 100 times better than christy moore

  • lovely !

  • good version...do listen to the original by Bill Caddick the writer and his exceptional voice and guitar

  • Love your rendition, but for the benefit of others, this is not an Irish song, it was written by a guy I know well named Bill Caddick, born just up the road from where I write in Sedgley, in an area known as The Back country, near Wolverhampton in West Midlands England. But many folk here and in Ireland believe it to be an Irish song, and though the tune is by Thaicovsky it has a very Irish air
