They are clearly doing this in imitation of those same "clandestine armed struggle groups" in a feeble attempt to look scary and be taken seriously.
In the end, they look like poseurs.
Also, they are technically violating NYC anti-mask law, so they are risking a summons and having their info made public anyway.

The groups responsible for these occupations is explicitly anti-authoritarian and covers their faces so they can unleash their desires without the police taking them away. It is a common sense measure that has been used for decades, and is in no way exclusive to clandestine armed struggle groups, but apparently you're too privileged and silly to know this. actually the masks were worn to protect people's identity because in past events the campus newspaper (Free Press) has quoted people without their permission or consent and tried to make leaders out of particular people who are not. This was to address that, not play pseudo-Zapatista imitators.
