The External Instrument Device makes working with Reason and Live really easy. This video goes through the steps necessary to get these two programs talking to each other. This is a response to a discussion in my Advanced Music Production course at Berkleemusic.com. Check it out here:

  • Live does not record ANY automation into its "clips".

This is why most musicians won't compose with Ableton Live.

Even if you are using Ableton's synths, Live doesn't record its own automation into clips.

..even if you record automation in Live's "arrange view".

I actually hate Live because of that lol.

This video is actually teaching you how to waste your time.

Compose using Cubase with Reason. Then put the audio into Live to mash it up

  • @8messa Come on man, what are you talking about? Many musicians compose in Live.

  • But how can you control parmeters like filter cutoff and ressonance. I want to control and sequence the automation in Live. I've Rewired Live and Reason befor but there isn't much of a point if I still need to use there sequencer and another keyboard with pots to controll LFO's or Envelope parameters. Can you help

  • @redirishmanxlt look up "modulation" or "clip envelopes" in the Live manual, that should get you going. Every parameter in live has an associated CC, you would draw those into your live tracks, luckily they are nicely labeled in the clip envelope section in Live.

  • Thanks for the info. Great tutorial'!

  • Why does he opens a combinator and get the mixer and other tracks in? I think there s no need of combinators..?

  • Great tutorial! Exactly what I was looking for. I love Reason but I know I should learn Ableton. This way I can do both. Thanks. 2 thumbs up, way up!

  • @leaprog make sure you are arming the separate Live tracks, not the Reason tracks. (Disable all midi controllers within reason preferences)

  • Please help im doin it exactly as your video explains but when i try to arm combinator1 again it just keeps playing the malstrom through the combinator copy
