Robert Schumann (1810-1856)

Liederkreis, Op. 39, n° 1-12 (text: Josef von Eichendorff - révision O. Wolters)

5 - "Mondnacht"

Régine Crespin, soprano (1927-2007)
John Wustman, piano
Paris, Salle Wagram, June 1966

Es war, als hätt' der Himmel,
Die Erde still geküßt,
Daß sie im Blütenschimmer
Von ihm nun träumen müßt.

Die Luft ging durch die Felder,
Die Ähren wogten sacht,
Es rauschten leis die Wälder,
So sternklar war die Nacht.

Und meine Seele spannte
Weit ihre Flügel aus,
Flog durch die stillen Lande,
Als flöge sie nach Haus.

  • The tempo. for once, is correct; an atmosphere of rapt wonderment is achieved, which was surely Schumann's intention. Madame Crespin was one of the last great opera singers who could also give a credible song recital;now she too is no longer with us. I was also surprised and delighted by Mr. Wustman's sensitive and beautifully playing here.

  • I prefer Crespin when she is not singing "off the voice". Not good for her, not good for the song.

  • Just gorgeous

  • Très beau. Cette grande voix qui se plie au chuchotement de ce lied, qui se décolore. Dommage seulement, ce ton qui semble un peu plaintif, "geignard"... peut-être parce que le tempo est un poil trop lent ?

  • Quelle merveille! and all these wonderful paintings. a feast for the sight, the ear and the mind. How sensitive!

  • Very lovely!
