You should look up the official wiki page about distro's though,
with a notice at SHR and Hackable:1
SHR is for me good enough for daily phone using ;)
Hackable:1 is the good old 2007.7 gui running on debian, a really nice combo :)

aha, thanks!
Then I think I'll install the ASU 2008.8 image and see how it is, that is; as long as it isn't qtopia.
I've tried it, and it just didn't fall into place for me.

* When you buy the moko it has 2007 (and gtk)
* ASU/2008 is is a new image with more features (and qt)
* FSO an upcoming (half finished image) introducing a new backend and a nice python-based frontend named zhone.
* SHR is an attempt to combine the FSO backend with the gtk of 2007. I don't think they have released anything yet.

I'm still mixing up FSO ASU and SHR, I can't remember what's what anymore.
What is on it when you get the moko?
I've read some things about the 2008.8 image that it's a bit difficult to upgrade it (I've probably misunderstood something there but..
Is that true?
I've more or less been following up on some of the mailing lists, so I've got a partial understanding of what's going on there now.

Well, I've tried out a few different distro's and I'm not going to run debian on it. I've found that OM2007.2 fits my taste better than the other ones. Only problem is that it's not being worked on as far as I know... :~(
