Maoists blew up at least four government buildings, a community center, and a mobile tower in Kalta village of Indias Orissa state on Thursday.
They carried out the attacks during the 24-hour shutdown called by the Maoists. The rebels are demanding the release of 30 Maoists arrested earlier.
The Maoists blew up an abandoned police station and another building where a camp of the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force was functioning. They also blew up an office of a labor organization in the village.
[Dasrath Tansen, Villager]:
Around three to four people came here, they asked us to vacate the houses and go behind the school. They set off the explosives, then asked us to go back and sleep in our houses and told us there is nothing to fear.
State authorities have promised tough action against the Maoists.
[Naveen Patnaik, Chief Minister, Orissa]:
"We will certainly deal with them and everyone should remember these extremists, these naxals or Maoists are anti-national criminals and they should not be tolerated in any civilized society where they are breaking the most essential and critical laws of our country.
India's prime minister has described the Maoists as the biggest internal security challenge since independence from Britain.
The federal government banned and formally labeled Maoist insurgents as a terrorist group, hoping it would give security forces more enforcement powers.
