I have played around with After Effects and Trapcode Particular.

You are free to use(adapt) this for your work.

This project file requires some 3rd party plugins, Trapcode Particular, Magic Bullet Looks and Video Copilot Twitch. But I think Looks and Twitch is not essential for this experiment =)
