An instructional video from the Freedom Machine Prahran explaining how to change a chain with a wippermann link.
Step 1 Release the chain tension - using derailleurs put chain onto smallest sprocket and chain ring.

Step 2 Locate & unlock the Wipperman link and remove chain - locate Wipperman link on bottom of chain make a zigzag out of the chain and push the ends of the link together, remove both ends so you dont lose them pedal forwards.

Step 3 Fit the chain - run the chain thru both jockey wheels letting gravity pull it down, pull the chain two thirds thru then back over the jockey wheels and under the cogs, then over the cogs and then thread it thru the front derailleur onto the small chain, pedaling to help it drag thru.

Step 4 Lubricate the Wipperman link

Step 5 Fit the Wipperman link - on the bottom put the lefthand in from behind and the righthand side from the front, make your zigzag and put the pins in.

Step 6 Lubricate the chain - turning the pedals backwards, put one drop on every second link.

Step 7 Wipe off excess oil - with a rag spin pedals backwards half a dozen times.

  • i screwed up and took a link out that wasnt the wipperman link can i fix this?

  • @TheRealRandomNetwork You could try to fix it, but it wouldn't be trust worthy.

I suggest you limp into the nearest bike shop and buy a new chain.

  • howcome i cant find the link that unlocks it?

do all chains have that one link?

  • @ilikeflatbuns357 If you can't find that link, you will need to use a chain tool to break a link.
