  • @rdneckable Why is that hard to believe? The competition to get into Heifetz's master classes at U.S.C. was intense; people were striving to be the best.

As for people not helping one another, perhaps you should take a look at the Bible, or many other religious traditions.

And this is not something unique to "today." Human nature changes very slowly, if it changes at all. You can count on (1) dominance (2) ability and (3) hierarchy. We humans love hierarchy.

  • I've always loved the tale of two musician friends who went to Heifetz's debut at the age of 14 or so. One of the friends was a pianist, the other was a violinist.

After ten or twenty minutes, the violinist turned to his pianist friend, and said, "Don't you think it's getting rather warm in here?" His friend replied, "Not for pianists." :-)

  • Utter magnificent magic!

  • Good play but nothing to do with whoever is WHITE or not!

  • Makes me proud to be white

  • @tobbems-It's simply unfair to compare two different musicians playing two different musical genres. Besides, I would have thought that you would have compare Heifetz to Jimmy Page, who used a violin bow to play electric guitar in a band named Led Zeppelin.. Eddie Van Halen is a fine rock guitarist and philanthropist in the Los Angeles area. He donated 75 of his own guitars to public schools just today. Heifetz is arguably the finest violinist who ever lived. Perspective is "key," my friend...

  • *Old joke from an Interlochen Summer.

  • Despite Heifetz being the best, you're still third best in the world. And everyone one other than you is tied at second.

  • :)

  • i remember a picture of mr Heifetz with Erick Friedman, one link to the english page of wikipedia on Erick Friedman, there was a picture of them both, but Heifetz looked really really old in that picture, it's so offputting to know that after you dedicate your entire life to developing fine motor skills you actually get to witness them leaving you slowly towards the end of your life
