One of 9 Video Pieces made in Calcutta.
I made these short video installation pieces using progressive frame, high resolution Motion Jpeg capture. The cameras were small and could be taken into any situation and was similar to mobilephone video, but with higher resolution (providing more potential for extracting and reanimation). Each layer of the original video was remixed to find some kind of revelation about the process at the sub-pixel level. The medium provided the answers through post production accident. Here different modes of graphic extraction were utilised using a combination of multiplication mattes and difference mattes -- hence the title. Elements were composited together initially wth luma keys, then these results were used as sources for further compositing, in search of the energy of a system beyond literal image. The phase of colours were altered and different amounts of motion blur were applied to the new speed-adjusted blending of frames.
This was the basic technical premise in Calcutta -- to reduce the literal image to an abstracted energy, performed by movement of the videographer and the appropriation of macroscopic objects. All of these works were used (in a less developed form) with a performance and video installation in Uma Gallery Calcutta April 2008. The graphics contain an energy -- literally, the multiplication of difference.
This will become a series based in different cities in 2008. 1 Calcutta, 2. Berlin, 3. Glasgow, 4. Tokyo.
