  • Who doesn't love a good sea shanty :)

  • Am listening to this in memory of Sweeneys Men. A founder member of that group Joe Dolan, died some time ago. Great stuff this! People Like Andy Irvine, the aforementioned Mr Dolan, Christy Moore, Johnny Moynihan began this when it wasn't fashionable-still timeless this material.

  • @locomotive1804 I always thought it was about gambling. Where'd I get that idea? Like rolling dice, and Sally Brown was some type of metaphor for something to do with the whole thing.

I'm always amazed when I listen to lyrics that I always thought I knew, only to find out that I didn't know them at all. There's a name for it....

  • Er you get the reference here don't you? The girl was in love with Admiral Viscout Horatio Lord Nelson.

  • As schoolchildren we learnt this song while taking a weekend retreat on Frigate Foudroyant, which at one time was the oldest ship afloat in the world, moored in Portsmouth Harbour

  • No Disco!

  • I kinda prefer the other version where they are bent over, laughing ! Heard this from Irish buskers but never really listened to the lyrics, I liked the melody. weeelll... Now I understand why THEY were laughing as well! :)

  • You think you've got problems - we learnt sea shanties day and night! Hello sailor!!

  • I saw Johnny Moynihan and Andy Irvine doing a gig at a Cork Folk Festival some years ago. When they (eventually!) got going they sang heaps of old Sweenys Men material. The Joe Dolan sometimes called "Galway Joe Dolan" coincidentally died within weeks of his illustrious namesake from Mullingar. Sweeneys Men were the forerunners of these lads.

Garro 109: am reading the Leagues O'Toole book at the moment. one mighty sound these lads had. Never forgotten.

  • @CastletoKarma your dead right,they produced a sound which is timeless,true talent.

  • Very good !
