It's not too late to participate! Meet for the event and get sponsors later.

Please blog your heart out at save-the-maple-forest@googlegroups.com

Greetings,

The Friends of Alewife Reservation is a part of the Mass Trails initiative currently being implemented, with new bike trails going from Bedford to the Atlantic Ocean. While we're excited to be able to participate in this project, we're also concerned about a number of issues going on here in Alewife.

I'm writing today to invite you to two very timely events in the month of October. As some of you may know, it is a critical time for the Alewife Reservation, as plans to develop the priceless Silver Maple Forest continue to move forward despite our best efforts to stop them. Conservation, though, isn't just a matter for the courts -- the continued existence of our 'true urban wild' depends on your engagement with the land!

It is with this in mind that we invite you to our Dusk Bike Ride around the Alewife Reservation on October 21st at 5 PM (walkers are welcome too!). We'll stop by the Silver Maple Forest for a walk with noted Edible Plant Specialist David Craft and then continue on to the Alewife Summer Shack, were a nourishing meal will await our noble riders!

We ask that riders raise $100 (or best offer) in support of their ride around our embattled landscape. You'll find a map, directions, and sponsor forms online at www.friendsofalewifereservation.org .

Additionally, we invite you to a Panel Discussion - Beyond the Local Ordinance: Nature Has Definable Rights. Noted Wetlands Scientist for the Silver Maple Forest, Charles Katuska, and Gail Darrel of the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (a PA Law Firm) will speak from 3-5 PM on Saturday, October 23rd. Charles will speak to the functions and values of the Belmont Uplands project site and potential impact to the Mystic River watershed. Gail's organization is currently enjoying great success challenging similar building projects using the US Constitution and other fundamental national documents.

It is sure to be an intensely educational and thought-provoking afternoon at Democracy Center in Harvard Square. More information is found on our website and in the attached flyer.

We look forward to welcoming you to this truly unique property. If you have any questions or comments, please let us know by calling our office at 617-415-1884 or emailing info@friendsofalewifereservation.org .

Thank you,

Rick Richards
